CataractCataracts may take several years to develop. As the lens of the eye becomes increasingly thicker, vision degrades. The primary symptom of cataracts is clouded vision. One might not think that clouding could create significant problems, but it most certainly does. At some point, many people who have cataracts decide to have the clouded lens removed. At Pasadena Eye Associates, we help patients navigate the process from start to finish so they obtain the outcome they deserve. One of the questions we know most people have is: “what will recovery be like after cataract surgery?” Let’s take a look at that here.

The minor surgical procedure performed to remove cataracts is conducted on an outpatient basis. Patients do not need to stay overnight in the hospital. The procedure itself may take as little as 10 minutes. However, patients should expect to remain in the office for a short time so we can monitor them as the anesthetic wears off. Cataract surgery is performed with eye drops that numb the eye and, in some cases, a mild sedative.

Surgery on the eyes generally requires that we bandage the eye temporarily. Even without addressing, the eye is not capable of crystal-clear vision right away. For this reason, patients who undergo cataract surgery need to have someone drive them to their appointment and see them safely home. Once in their own environment, patients may be able to safely get from room to room as needed. However, it is recommended that the day of surgery focus on rest.

Precautions for a Fast Recovery

Patients are often able to begin getting back to their normal routine within a few days of cataract removal. Our priority is a full and successful recovery, so we encourage patients to take it slow. Spend as little time as possible on digital devices, reading, and watching television. The eyes need rest. Recovery may also involve specific precautions to minimize the slight side effects that may occur. These include:

  • Use prescription or over-the-counter eye drops as instructed in post-operative guidelines.
  • Wear sunglasses when outdoors as the eyes may be light-sensitive.
  • Take measures to reduce exposure to wind and debris.
  • Avoid hot tub and swimming pool use for at least one week after cataract surgery.
  • Avoid wearing makeup for at least one week after cataract removal.
